Paul Pierce netted 14 points and Andre Miller added 12 off the bench for the Wizards, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Washington concluded its five-game road trip at 2-3.
"Defense, we got back to our concepts," Wall said. "Our main focus is to get to 100, but to keep the other team under 100."
Anthony Davis posted 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Tyreke Evans provided 21 points, seven boards and four assists for New Orleans, which has alternated wins and losses over its last 10 contests.
"We were trying to make the right play, but they did a good job of covering up our options," Davis said.
The Pelicans were within 69-67 after Ryan Anderson nailed a 3-pointer early in the fourth, but the Wizards responded with an 8-2 spurt to regain control. Andre Miller netted six points during the swing, including the final four to stake Washington to a 77-69 cushion with 8:20 remaining.
New Orleans was never closer than four the rest of the way.
Davis cut down the lane and finished with an emphatic two-handed dunk off a pass from Evans with 30.5 seconds left to claw the Pelicans within 89-85. Rasual Butler split a pair of foul shots with 29.7 ticks on the clock, but Jrue Holiday was unable to bank in a left wing leaner at the other end and Butler sunk two more foul shots to seal the outcome.
Earlier, Holiday's layup provided New Orleans its only lead, 8-7, at the 8:33 mark of the first.
The Wizards led 27-23 following a quarter of play and 52-44 at halftime.
Evans' layup in the waning seconds of the third trimmed the New Orleans margin to 69-64 entering the fourth.
