Warriors return home to face Nuggets
Jan 19, 2015 - 3:13 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Golden State Warriors have made life on visiting teams miserable this season and will play the next five games at Oracle Arena, where the Denver Nuggets will pay a visit on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
The Warriors have won 15 straight at home and are 17-1 as the host. They will also entertain the Houston Rockets, Sacramento Kings, Boston Celtics and Chicago Bulls.
Golden State improved to an NBA-best 32-6 with Saturday's 131-106 demolition of the Rockets at the Toyota Center. Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson scored 27 points apiece, David Lee added 18 off the bench and Marreese Speights netted 15 points for the Warriors, who scored 38 points in the third quarter, shot 54.9 percent and had a 49-39 rebounding advantage.
"We had a good focus ... I felt like our guys were locked in from the beginning," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said.
Curry added 11 assists in the win, Golden State's ninth in 10 tries.
The Warriors are 19-6 against Western Conference foes (9-1 at home) and first in the NBA with 110.0 ppg. They also lead the league in field goal percentage at 48.5 percent.
Golden State's only loss at home was on Nov. 11 versus San Antonio.
Denver has dropped two in a row after a five-game win streak and dropped a 113-105 decision to the lowly Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday. The Wolves scored 37 points in the first quarter and shot 53.8 percent.
Ty Lawson had 22 points and seven assists to pace the Nuggets, and both Wilson Chandler and J.J. Hickson scored 14 points. Jameer Nelson scored 16 points off the bench in his second game with Denver.
"That's a bad loss, not because we're playing a bad team, but in light of our schedule we have coming up," Denver coach Brian Shaw said.
Shaw's squad, which has a 6-13 road ledger, will play the next three games at home against formidable foes in San Antonio, Boston and Washington.
The Nuggets and Warriors are playing the first of three matchups and will meet again March 13 and April 15. The two Western foes split four meetings a season ago, while Golden State is 6-3 in the past nine encounters.
Denver has won two straight as the guest in this series and has not lost a season series against Golden State since 2002-03 (0-4).
