Hayward leads Jazz past Warriors
Jan 31, 2015 - 6:17 AMVideo
The Jazz improved to 12-10 on the season when Hayward scores at least 20 points, compared to 5-20 when he nets 19 or fewer. He finished with 26 in this one to go along with a career-high 15 rebounds and six assists.
"We all just came ready to play," said Hayward. "We were all extremely focused."
Utah also got a boost from its reserves, who had just nine fewer points between them than the starters. Trevor Booker scored 17 points, Trey Burke had 15 with seven assists and Rudy Gobert had 10 points and 10 boards for his sixth double-double in January. The young 7-footer had just two double-doubles in his career before this month.
"They were good," said Warriors coach Steve Kerr. "They dominated the glass. Gobert is long, a couple times where we boxed him out and it didn't matter, he just reached right over the top of us and snared the rebound."
Steph Curry filled it up with 32 points, seven rebounds and six assists in Golden State's second straight loss, but his running mate Klay Thompson contributed just 12 points and did not connect from deep on three tries.
Curry and Thompson will both represent the Western Conference in the All-Star game on Feb. 15.
Utah was the better team for 44 minutes, but Leandro Barbosa led a furious comeback and made the home fans at EnergySolutions Arena sweat out what should have been a comfortable win.
Barbosa scored 13 of his 15 points in the final 3:35, including three 3- pointers. His difficult running bank shot with 54 seconds left cut the deficit to nine, and his 3 on the next trip made it 106-100.
Burke then missed two free throws to keep the door open, but Joe Ingles grabbed the offensive board, waited to get fouled and calmly sank a pair. Barbosa then finally missed from deep, and Hayward sealed the win with two from the line.
The Jazz led 56-45 at halftime and opened the second half on a 9-2 run. Hayward scored five during the spurt, which Enes Kanter capped with a layup.
The spread reached 18 and remained in double figures until the late push.
Game Notes
Jazz rookie guard Dante Exum left the game in the third quarter after taking a hard hit to the throat. The injury isn't believed to be serious ... The Warriors have lost five of their last seven road games after opening 13-1 away from home ... Derrick Favors scored 15 points for Utah.
