Road-weary Mavs rout Kings without Dirk
Feb 6, 2015 - 6:35 AM Sacramento, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Monta Ellis scored 21 points, Tyson Chandler had 16 points and 16 rebounds and the road-weary Dallas Mavericks rolled to a 101-78 win over the Sacramento Kings on Thursday night.J.J. Barea and Devin Harris each scored 15 in the win and Richard Jefferson added 14 points for the Mavericks, who went 3-0 against the Kings this season.
Dallas finished 11-8 during a stretch in which it played 14 of 19 games on the road since Jan. 2, including a 128-114 loss to Golden State in Oakland on Wednesday night.
The short turnaround caused Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle to give Dirk Nowitzki the night off to rest.
Carlisle's team will return to Dallas to begin a three-game homestand on Saturday against Portland.
"Our balance all around was good and it needed to be without Dirk," Carlisle said. "We just had really even contributions from top to bottom. It was a game we had to get because last night was really tough."
DeMarcus Cousins had 23 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Kings, who have lost 10 of their last 11.
"Act like you care, that's what it comes down to," Cousins said.
Rudy Gay was the only other scorer in double figures as Sacramento missed 50 of its 79 shots.
Cousins had 12 points and six assists in the first quarter but the teams were tied at 23-23 going into the second.
Dallas then used a 14-0 run in the second quarter to take control of the game, holding the Kings scoreless for almost three minutes.
Five different players scored during the flurry and the Mavericks carried a 60-43 lead into halftime after Ellis knocked down a 3 before the buzzer.
The Mavericks never trailed again, leading by as much as 24 points in the third quarter and 29 in the fourth.
