Pelicans welcome Jazz to Big Easy

Feb 9, 2015 - 3:07 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The New Orleans Pelicans will most likely be without All-Star Anthony Davis when the team hosts the Utah Jazz Monday night at Smoothie King Center.

Davis is listed as day-to-day with a right shoulder sprain, but is expected to sit out Monday's contest. He was hurt in a hard fall Saturday night versus the Chicago Bulls. Davis completed an alley-oop dunk, then slid off the rim and landed hard. He stayed in the game for a minute, then left. Thankfully for the Pelicans, the X-rays on his shoulder came back negative.

Without Davis for much of the contest against Chicago, the Pelicans were no match. They fell, 107-72, for their second loss in the last three. It was New Orleans' second straight home setback.

Davis hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to beat the Oklahoma City Thunder, but the Pelicans shot 37.2 percent from the floor in the loss to the Bulls.

Tyreke Evans led the way with 15 points, followed by 10 from Alexis Ajinca. No other New Orleans player managed double figures as key contributors Dante Cunningham, Ryan Anderson, Omer Asik and Eric Gordon combined for 13 points on 5-for-30 shooting.

"We had a tough night," said Pelicans head coach Monty Williams. "Mentally, we have to get ourselves right for the next game. We didn't have the normal juice."

The Pelicans finish this homestand on Wednesday against the Indiana Pacers.

The Jazz halted a three-game slide on Saturday with a 102-90 home win over the Sacramento Kings. Utah has lost two in a row on the road and will finish this quick road trip on Wednesday in Dallas.

Against the Kings, Gordon Hayward scored 17 of his 30 points in the first half to help the Jazz to victory. Utah took a 10-point lead at the half and never looked back, scoring the first eight points of the second half.

"Overall it was a great team win for us," Hayward said. "We got going early with some stuff."

Derrick Favors deposited 20 points with nine rebounds and five assists and Enes Kanter had 17 points with 13 rebounds for the Jazz. Trey Burke chipped in 10 off the bench.

The Jazz shot 50 percent from the field, but a dismal 5-for-19 from long range.

Utah defeated former head coach Tyrone Corbin, who is the interim coach of the Kings. Corbin was fired this past offseason and replaced by Quin Snyder on the Jazz sideline.

The Pelicans have won the first two meetings this season and will go for the first season sweep against Utah in franchise history. New Orleans has won three straight as the host in this series.
