Nuggets, Lakers square off at Staples Center

Feb 10, 2015 - 2:59 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - A pair of struggling Western clubs square off Tuesday at Staples Center, where the Los Angeles Lakers take on the Denver Nuggets.

The Nuggets have lost six in a row and the Lakers are winless in their previous four games.

Los Angeles has dropped 13 of its last 14 games and came up empty on a four- game tour out east. In Sunday's 120-105 setback against LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers, Kevin Love led the hosts with 32 points, Kyrie Irving had 28 and 10 assists, and James finished with 22 points, 10 boards and eight assists.

The Lakers were paced by rookie Jordan Clarkson's career-high 20 points. Ed Davis and Wesley Johnson scored 16 and 15 points, respectively, for LA, which made 41 percent from the floor and dropped its 10th straight on the road. The Lakers were down by as many as 26 points.

"We thought our guys were soft tonight," Lakers head coach Byron Scott said. "We allowed them to do anything they wanted."

Cleveland shot 54.9 percent and sank 18-of-33 3-pointers.

Clarkson is averaging 13.8 points, 3.4 assists and 2.9 rebounds since being named a starter eight games ago.

After entertaining Denver, the Lakers, who are just 7-17 at home, will visit Portland Wednesday.

The Nuggets have dropped six in a row and 13 of their last 14 games, including Monday's 124-114 setback versus the Oklahoma City Thunder. Thunder star Kevin Durant poured in 40 points on 13-of-19 shooting and tied his career high with seven 3-pointers.

OKC made 53.8 percent for the game and 12-of-24 3-pointers.

Wilson Chandler led the Nuggets with 23 points, while Kenneth Faried registered 22 points with 10 rebounds and Ty Lawson added 22 points and nine assists for the Nuggets.

"Well when I talk about the kind of losses that I can live with, this is one of them," Nuggets coach Brian Shaw said. "I just have to take my hat off to those guys over there in that other locker room."

Denver will also visit Milwaukee and Oklahoma City on this three-game trek and has dropped four straight and seven of the last eight road games.

Nuggets guard Jameer Nelson (Achilles) did not play Monday and is questionable.

The Nuggets and Lakers have split the first two meetings this season and will square off again April 8 at the Pepsi Center. The Lakers ended a seven-game slide to the Nuggets with a 111-103 victory on Dec. 30.
