Spurs pull away from Pistons

Feb 12, 2015 - 4:45 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Danny Green scored 19 points with eight rebounds to help the San Antonio Spurs to a 104-87 win over the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night in each team's final game before the All-Star break.

Tony Parker had 17 points with six assists and Manu Ginobili added 13 points off the bench for the Spurs, who have won four of their last five.

D.J. Augustin paced the Pistons with 22 points to go with six assists, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope tallied 20 points in the setback.

"Their offense was very good and we were a step slow. I thought we really fought hard," said Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy.

Detroit went scoreless for nearly the final four minutes of the first quarter. Meanwhile, the Spurs ended the frame on an elongated 9-2 run and grabbed a 20-12 lead entering the second.

Patty Mills nailed a pair of 3-pointers around an Andre Drummond layup that pushed San Antonio's lead to 28-16 early in the second. Anthony Tolliver and Jodie Meeks followed with respective 3s to keep the Pistons close. Parker's floater made it a 12-point Spurs lead with 3.6 seconds left in the half, but John Lucas III fired in a 3-pointer just inside midcourt as the buzzer sounded to cut the Pistons' deficit to 48-39 at the break.

Tim Duncan made his first basket of the night 4:51 into the second half to put the Spurs up by 18, and they led 82-63 after three quarters.

"We were pretty good," said Parker of the Spurs' defense. "Especially until mid-fourth quarter. Overall we had a great defensive game."

Caldwell-Pope made a 3-pointer following his layup that helped Detroit trim the margin to 91-79 with under seven minutes left in the fourth. San Antonio responded with back-to-back buckets to maintain its distance and had no problem closing out the Pistons to snap a two-game skid at the Palace.
