Avery Bradley netted eight points in the final 30 seconds of regulation to send the game into overtime, including a left wing 3-pointer at the buzzer.
The Lakers, though, scored the first six points of the extra session and were never seriously threatened again. Lin nailed a backbreaking right elbow jumper with 34.1 ticks to go in OT to make it 116-111.
Wesley Johnson posted 22 points and five rebounds and Nick Young added 19 points for Los Angeles, which snapped a seven-game losing streak.
"In the overtime we hung in there, we got our composure back and got the win. We played hard, competed and that's what I'm looking for," Lakers coach Byron Scott said.
Jae Crowder supplied 22 points and seven boards, Isaiah Thomas netted 21 points and Bradley finished with 20 for the Celtics, who have dropped three of their last four games.
"The Lakers made tough shots, credit them. Jeremy Lin killed us all night. We weren't as good in overtime as we were at the end of the game," Celtics coach Brad Stevens said.
The Lakers were up 100-90 with 3:31 left in regulation before the Celtics went on an 11-3 run to claw within two. Bradley drove in for a dunk and knocked down a triple to cap the surge and cut the deficit to 103-101 with 18.7 seconds on the clock.
Nick Young sandwiched 3-of-4 free throws around a Crowder layup to make it 106-103 in favor of LA with 8.5 ticks to go.
Earlier, the Celtics led 32-26 after a quarter of play, 58-56 at the break and 78-73 after three.
Young and Lin had four points apiece during a 12-3 LA burst to stake it to its 10-point fourth quarter margin.
Game Notes
The Lakers and Celtics have totaled 33 NBA championships, but this contest featured the lowest combined winning percentage (.286) for these teams entering a head-to-head matchup ... The Celtics announced Sunday that Jared Sullinger will be out for the rest of the season due to a stress fracture in his left foot.
