Hayward and Derrick Favors, a former Net, scored 16 of Utah's final 17 points to repel a late Brooklyn run.
Favors finished with 22 points, Dante Exum added 14, and Rudy Gobert led the way with 11 rebounds in Utah's fifth win in its last six games.
"I thought we took better of the ball ... I thought Derrick was really good," Jazz coach Quin Snyder said.
Despite shooting 50 percent overall and going 8-for-15 from 3-point range, the Nets lost their third straight game. Brook Lopez and Thaddeus Young each had 19 points for Brooklyn.
"Utah did a great job controlling the pace," said Nets coach Lionel Hollins. "We had been scoring a lot of points."
Down by seven with 6:37 to play, Lopez scored six straight points to pull the Nets within one. He had a chance to complete a three-point play and tie the game but missed the free throw.
At the other end of the floor, Hayward drained a 3 to start a 10-0 run that left Brooklyn down by 11 with less than 3 1/2 minutes remaining. The Nets would not get within seven points the rest of the way.
Neither team led by more than five in a tight first quarter that Brooklyn finished with a 24-21 lead. All five Nets starters played the entire period, led by Lopez and Young with eight points apiece.
Trey Burke's 3 just past the midpoint of the second put the Jazz in front by three, but they would not score for the next 3 1/2 minutes. Deron Williams scored his first three points of the game before Bojan Bogdanovic hit 3s on back to back possessions to finish a 9-0 Brooklyn run.
Utah scored seven of the last eight points of the half, but Brooklyn led 43-42 at the break.
The Jazz led 66-63 after 36 minutes despite Brooklyn shooting 60 percent in the third quarter. Bogdanovic hit a 3 at 5:47 to tie the game, but the Jazz led the rest of the way.
