Spurs go for 6th straight win vs. Raptors
Mar 10, 2015 - 12:35 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Antonio Spurs are one of the hottest teams in the NBA and they'll try to continue their run of championship form Tuesday night when the Toronto Raptors visit AT&T Center. The Spurs have won five straight and five in a row at home. They've closed the gap to a half-game behind Dallas for the sixth seed in the Western Conference. San Antonio is a game out of the No. 5 spot.
San Antonio has a huge game on tap Thursday with LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in town. The Spurs will close their homestand Sunday against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
On Sunday, the Spurs toppled the Chicago Bulls, 116-105.
Tony Parker scored a season-high 32 points to lead the Spurs.
"He's been in that mode for the last two or three games and feeling pretty confident of his health," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said of Parker.
Kawhi Leonard posted 20 points with eight rebounds and Manu Ginobili chipped in 16 points for the Spurs. Patty Mills scored 15 off the bench and Danny Green managed 11.
Tim Duncan went 0-for-8 from the field and it was his first game ever in the NBA without a made field goal.
San Antonio led by as many as 19 in the opening half following a pair of free throws from Parker and it took a 57-39 lead into the break. The margin shrunk to eight, but the Spurs comfortably won.
The Raptors are sliding down the standings in the Eastern Conference, but still own a huge lead in the Atlantic Division. Toronto has lost three straight and eight of its last nine with the only victory coming against the Philadelphia 76ers.
The Raptors conclude their three-game road trip on Tuesday and dropped the first two to the Charlotte Hornets and Oklahoma City Thunder.
On Sunday, Toronto became the latest victim of Russell Westbrook in a 108-104 loss. Westbrook had 30 points, 17 assists and 11 rebounds to lead the Thunder.
DeMar DeRozan supplied 24 points and nine assists and Terrence Ross collected 20 points for Toronto. Kyle Lowry had 14, followed by 11 from Lou Williams off the bench and 10 apiece from Jonas Valanciunas and Greivis Vasquez.
"It's not like we didn't play hard, but they took it to another level and we didn't meet it," Toronto coach Dwane Casey said.
The OKC lead swelled to 95-83 early in the fourth following an Anthony Morrow jumper, but Valanciunas finished off a 9-0 Raptors spurt with a short hook to claw them within 95-92 with 7:01 to play.
OKC, though, responded with seven of the next nine points, with an Enes Kanter reverse layup extending its margin to 102-94 with 2:38 left.
A DeRozan reverse dunk whittled the gap to 106-104 with 15.4 ticks on the clock, but Westbrook sunk a pair of foul shots at the other end. DeRozan then missed a step-back 3 to seal the outcome.
The Raptors beat the Spurs in Toronto on Feb. 8 to stem a seven-game series losing streak. San Antonio has won five straight over the Raptors in Alamo City.
