Sixers, Nets tangle in Philly

Mar 14, 2015 - 1:50 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Brooklyn Nets will try to stop a five-game losing streak Saturday night when they visit the Wells Fargo Center to take on the Philadelphia 76ers.

It's terrible timing for this skid for Brooklyn. The Nets have fallen 3 1/2 games out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Brooklyn hasn't won since March 2 at home against the Golden State Warriors. Since, the Nets were swept in a homestand by the Charlotte Hornets, Phoenix Suns, Utah Jazz and New Orleans Pelicans.

The Nets began a four-game road trip with a 104-98 loss to the Miami Heat on Wednesday.

The Nets committed 21 turnovers which led to 26 Miami points in their fifth straight loss. Deron Williams and Jarrett Jack paced Brooklyn with 18 points apiece, and Thaddeus Young and Brook Lopez each scored 15.

"They're a good team, they have guys that played in championships on their team," said Young. "They know how to make runs."

Despite leading by as many as 16 in the fourth, Miami needed clutch plays from its backcourt to close out the game.

With a minute left, Jack hit a layup to cut the Heat's lead to 101-96. At the other end, Mario Chalmers drained a 3 and forced a Nets timeout. After Jack's 3 out of the timeout, Dwyane Wade knocked down a pair of free throws. Out of another timeout, Goran Dragic stole the ball, and Miami held on from there.

The Nets will visit the Minnesota Timberwolves and Cleveland Cavaliers on this trek.

On Friday, the Sixers defeated the Sacramento Kings, 114-107, at the Wells Fargo Center.

Robert Covington scored 24 points to lead the Philadelphia 76ers. Nerlens Noel had 16 points and 12 rebounds and Jerami Grant chipped in 13 points for Philadelphia, which has won two of its last three since a four-game losing skid.

The Kings led by as many as 18 in the third, but Philadelphia took an 88-82 lead heading into the fourth thanks to an 18-2 run over the final 4:13 of the quarter.

Philly overcame a monster night from DeMarcus Cousins. The All-Star center tied a season high of 39 points with a career-high 24 rebounds, and became the first player in the NBA this season to record a 30-point, 20-rebound game.

Cousins had 22 points and 15 rebounds in the opening half. The last player in the NBA to go for as many as 39 points with 24 rebounds was Chris Webber, also playing with Sacramento, in 2001.

"That first half was as poor a defensive half as we played all year. It is a complete misrepresentation of who we are," said Sixers coach Brett Brown. "To the guys credit they found a way to get back in it in a big way."

The Nets won two of three this season against their Atlantic Division rivals. Brooklyn has taken two straight in Philly and five of the last seven.
