Jazz aim for continued success vs. Hornets
Mar 16, 2015 - 2:01 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Utah Jazz are the hottest team in the NBA and they'll try to continue their momentum Monday when the Charlotte Hornets visit EnergySolutions Arena. The Jazz have won five straight for the first time in almost two years. Utah has taken five in a row at home and is 10-3 since the All-Star break.
Charlotte is eighth in the Eastern Conference, a half-game behind the Indiana Pacers, but only a half-game ahead of the Miami Heat and Boston Celtics for the final postseason berth.
Monday's tilt is the third of a four-game homestand for the Jazz, who knocked off the Houston Rockets and Detroit Pistons. They'll close the stay Wednesday versus the Washington Wizards.
On Saturday, Derrick Favors recorded 26 points to lead the Jazz in an 88-85 win over the Pistons.
"(I) was just taking my time (and) taking what the defense was giving me," Favors said.
Rodney Hood and Gordon Hayward each had 12 points and Rudy Gobert netted 10 points with 19 rebounds.
The Hornets salvaged a game on their homestand Friday with a 101-91 victory over the Chicago Bulls. Charlotte dropped the first two games against the Wizards and Sacramento Kings.
The Hornets begin a five-game western swing with so much on the line. They'll visit the Los Angeles Clippers, Kings, Minnesota Timberwolves and Bulls on this trek.
Against the Bulls on Friday, Gerald Henderson scored 20 points and was part of a huge third-quarter run that propelled the Hornets.
The Hornets overcame a 60-52 halftime deficit by outscoring Chicago by a 23-5 margin to begin the third quarter, a period in which the injury-plagued Bulls went a woeful 3-of-17 from the field and turned it over seven times en route to a fourth loss in five games.
"Our defense in the third quarter was obviously terrific," Hornets head coach Steve Clifford said.
Mo Williams chipped in 18 points and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had 13 with seven rebounds for a Charlotte team that won for a sixth time in its last eight despite center Al Jefferson sitting out Friday's matchup with a sprained right knee.
Jefferson is questionable Monday and Cody Zeller has the same status with a right shoulder sprain.
The Hornets beat the Jazz by 18 in Charlotte on Dec. 20 to snap a 10-game series losing streak. The Jazz have won seven straight over the Hornets in Salt Lake City.
