Warriors renew rivalry with visiting Lakers

(SportsNetwork.com) - The Golden State Warriors continue their homestand Monday night when the Los Angeles Lakers pay a visit to Oracle Arena.

The Warriors, who are 35 games ahead of the Lakers in the Pacific Division, have one of the NBA's biggest matchups up next when the Atlanta Hawks roll in on Wednesday.

Golden State hosts the New Orleans Pelicans, Utah Jazz and Washington Wizards on this stay.

After a road loss to the Denver Nuggets without five key players, the Warriors got back into win column Saturday night with a 125-94 demolition of the New York Knicks.

Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry returned to the lineup to help the Warriors. Thompson and Curry missed Friday's loss in Denver along with center Andrew Bogut and Andre Iguodala. All four players were held out to rest and they looked fresh against New York.

The Splash Brothers combined to score 52 points, with Thompson leading the team with 27. Curry dished out 11 assists and Justin Holiday netted 13 points off the bench.

Golden State has won six of its last seven.

"That's as good as it gets," said head coach Steve Kerr. "Our bench unit was fantastic. It was a good effort and we looked like ourselves again with our pace and taking care of the ball."

The Lakers have lost two in a row and seven of their last eight.

On Sunday, the Atlanta Hawks toppled the Lakers, 91-86, at Staples Center.

Carlos Boozer and Ryan Kelly netted 13 points apiece for Los Angeles. Jordan Clarkson added 10 points and Ed Davis grabbed 13 rebounds for the second unit.

"For the most part we played well, They (Hawks) played with so much poise, the bottom line is winning," Lakers coach Byron Scott said.

The Lakers stormed back into the contest using a 16-2 surge in which Atlanta missed eight straight shots from the floor. Wes Johnson finished off the burst with a right corner triple to claw the hosts within 85-83 with 30.1 ticks on the clock.

Dennis Schroder had the answer at the other end, driving in from the left wing and getting his layup to fall for a four-point cushion with 13.9 ticks on the clock.

Johnson was unable to hit on another trey and Kent Bazemore sealed the outcome with two free throws.

The Lakers beat the Warriors in Los Angeles on Dec. 23 to snap a four-game series losing streak. Golden State has taken four straight as the host over the Lakers.
