Jazz try to get back in win column, visit Lakers

Mar 19, 2015 - 1:32 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Utah Jazz were cooled off a bit last time out, but they'll try to reclaim some momentum Thursday night when they travel to the Staples Center to take on the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Jazz had a six-game winning streak ended Wednesday night when the Washington Wizards handed them an 88-84 home loss.

Gordon Hayward scored a game-high 26 points, Derrick Favors netted 16 and Rudy Gobert pulled down 14 rebounds in the loss. Trey Burke managed 14 off the bench.

The Wizards held on despite a number of crucial mistakes down the stretch.

First, holding a four-point lead with 20 seconds to play, Paul Pierce traveled on an inbounds pass. Then, Washington's defense allowed Hayward to fly in for an alley-oop on a side out-of-bounds play, and John Wall dribbled the ball off his foot under Utah's basket with 11 ticks remaining, leaving the door open.

"We played hard like we always do, we just came up short," said Hayward.

The Jazz won the turnover margin, 22-9, but only shot 50 percent from the foul line (12-for-24). Washington shot 52.4 percent from the floor and 6-for-11 from behind the arc.

The Lakers are in the midst of a three-game losing streak, including two in a row at home. They'll host the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday, then hit the road for five straight.

On Monday, the Lakers were game, but ultimately came up short in a 108-105 loss to the Golden State Warriors at Oracle Arena.

Jordan Clarkson and Wayne Ellington each had 17 in the Lakers third straight loss.

The Warriors could not shake the pesky Lakers, as Jordan Hill's hook shot with under five minutes to play capped a 6-0 spurt and tied the game at 95-95. Klay Thompson followed with a 3-pointer before Andre Iguodala's slam from Steph Curry gave the hosts a five-point edge. Thompson converted a driving floater at 2:29 to extend the lead to 102-95.

Wesley Johnson and Clarkson each made a tough jumper on consecutive possessions to cut the margin to three, and the Lakers had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds.

Clarkson was fouled with 6.3 seconds as the Warriors decided not to allow Los Angeles a chance at the tying shot. The rookie nailed both from the line to make it a one-point game, then Curry canned two at the line down the other end.

Golden State chose to foul and put the Lakers at the line on the next possession as the Warriors held off their lowly division rival.

"Again, it's our guys competing and playing as hard as they can and giving ourselves an opportunity to win," head coach Byron Scott said after practice on Wednesday. "I commend our guys on their effort, but at the end of the day, we still lose the game. That's what hurts the most."

The team announced guard Nick Young will remain sidelined due to a fractured kneecap.

The teams split two meetings this season in Salt Lake City and the last six encounters in Los Angeles.
