Barnes' layup helps Warriors edge Suns
Apr 3, 2015 - 5:51 AM Oakland, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Harrison Barnes capped a frantic closing minute with a game-winning layup to lift the Golden State Warriors to a 107-106 win over the floundering Phoenix Suns on Thursday night.Klay Thompson's 3-pointer tied the game with 34.7 seconds left, then P.J. Tucker drove the baseline for a layup to push the Suns back in front.
After three offensive rebounds by Andrew Bogut and Barnes on the following possession, Thompson kicked it to Stephen Curry in the corner for a 3-pointer that gave the Warriors a brief lead with 8.3 ticks to go. Eric Bledsoe then converted a reverse layup to keep the back-and-forth affair going.
Coming out of a timeout, Barnes took a pass from Andre Iguodala and muscled his way inside before flicking the ball in with less than a second on the clock. Phoenix attempted a last-ditch heave but it was well off and the Warriors held on.
Curry had a team-high 28 points to go along with eight rebounds, while Thompson added 16 points in Golden State's 11th straight win.
Bledsoe led the Suns with 18 points and 11 assists and T.J. Warren's 17-point effort keyed a comeback effort for the Suns, who have lost five straight and now sit 4 1/2 games behind Oklahoma City for the final playoff spot with six games left.
Warren netted the final nine points of a 13-4 run that gave Phoenix an 89-88 lead with 5:33 left in the fourth.
The two teams traded leads over the next couple of minutes, then Bledsoe buried a 3-pointer for a 98-94 edge with 2 1/2 minutes left. Curry answered with a transition 3-pointer before Warren converted a jumper to keep the Suns up three with 1:29 remaining.
Thompson corralled a Curry miss, was fouled and hit both free throws, but it was Warren again at the other end with a successful jumper to put Phoenix up 102-99 with 1:08 left. Each team had an empty possession before Thompson's triple tied the game.
Bogut scored six points during a 12-1 run for Golden State that gave it a 14-11 lead in the early going. Marreese Speights' hook shot in the closing seconds of the first helped the Warriors to a 27-22 edge entering the second.
Golden State held Phoenix scoreless for the first 3:10 of the second as its lead swelled to 14. The Suns managed to cut their deficit down to five late in the half, but the Warriors outscored them 9-3 over the final 1:33 for a 55-44 lead at halftime.
Markieff Morris, who scored 17 points with 12 rebounds, deposited seven points as part of a 15-5 surge for Phoenix to open the third quarter. Leandro Barbosa fired in a 3-pointer before driving in for a layup to stake Golden State to a 77-71 lead entering the fourth.
