DALLAS 103, NEW ORLEANS 97 --------------------------

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Josh Howard scored 22 points and Devin Harris added 19 as the Dallas Mavericks posted a 103-97 victory over the New Orleans Hornets in a preseason contest.

Reigning MVP Dirk Nowitzki scored 14 points for the Mavericks, who shot a sizzling 51 percent (39-of-77) from the field and outscored the Hornets, 33-14, in the third quarter to secure the victory.

Dallas played without starters Jason Terry and Erick Dampier, who has a right shoulder injury. Pivotal reserve Devean George also sat out with a stress reaction in his right foot.

But the Mavericks had more than enough offense thanks to Howard, who was suspended for the first two games of the regular season on Friday after an altercation with Sacramento Kings center Brad Miller on Tuesday night.

The incident started when Miller shoved Harris from behind as the two were running back up court, sparking a heated confrontation between the two.

As players from both gathered at mid-court, Howard retaliated for his teammate by throwing a forearm from behind at Miller - getting him booted from the contest.

In his one, Howard shot 9-of-14 from the field, including 3-of-4 on 3-pointers, and Harris was 7-of-11 from the floor, including 2-of-4 from the arc, for Dallas, which was outscored by 13 points in the final period.

Chris Paul had 16 points and 11 assists and Rasual Butler added 13 points for the Hornets, who had seven players score in double figures.

LA CLIPPERS 112, LA LAKERS 96 -----------------------------

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- As long as Kobe Bryant is still with the Los Angeles Lakers, they will need more production from their superstar.

Bryant scored 10 points and made just one field goal as the Lakers suffered a 112-96 loss to the rival Los Angeles Clippers in a preseason matchup at the Staples Center.

Bryant played 16 minutes and never got into rhythm. He made just 1-of-4 shots from the field and committed seven turnovers. The nine-time All-Star did make all eight of his free throw attempts.

Corey Maggette led the charge for the Clippers, scoring 22 points on 6-of-9 shooting in 24 minutes. Maggette's play help them jump out to a 59-53 lead at the half.

PHOENIX 98, CHARLOTTE 88 ------------------------

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Steve Nash collected 20 points, six rebounds and eight assists to lead the Phoenix Suns to a 98-88 win over the Charlotte Bobcats in preseason action.

Rookie Alando Tucker scored 14 points in 14 minutes and Shawn Marion added 13 for Phoenix, which took advantage of a shorthanded Charlotte squad.

The Bobcats played the game without forward Adam Morrison, who could miss the entire season after an MRI revealed a "partial to complete" tear of the ACL in his left knee.

It could be the second season-ending injury for Charlotte, which already will be without forward Sean May, who will undergo microfracture surgery on his right knee.

SACRAMENTO 111, PORTLAND 87 ---------------------------

SACRAMENTO, California (Ticker) -- Francisco Garcia scored 21 points and Kevin Martin added 20 as the Sacramento Kings rolled to a 111-87 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers in preseason action.

Top offseason acquisition Mikki Moore and undrafted rookie Darryl Watkins scored 13 points apiece for the Kings, who played without mercurial forward Ron Artest.

The defensive stalwart sat out with a lower left leg contusion suffered vs. the Utah Jazz on Thursday.

Garcia connected on 5-of-9 shots, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range, and Martin was 8-of-13 from the field, including 3-of-5 from the arc.
