Gasol helps Memphis beat New Orleans 101-99
Jan 19, 2016 - 12:16 AM MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) Marc Gasol's 10th rebound for Memphis went to a spot New Orleans couldn't get to in time. With 3.5 seconds remaining, Gasol tapped Courtney Lee's missed free throw toward midcourt. With no Pelicans around, New Orleans could only watch until the horn sounded, leaving the Grizzlies with a 101-99 victory Monday.
''Sometimes, you just get a bad bounce,'' said Jrue Holiday, who led the Pelicans with 23 points and nine assists. ''It looked like it was a bad bounce, and, from there, it's tough.''
Gasol, Lee, Matt Barnes and Jeff Green had 16 points apiece for Memphis, which has won three in a row and five of six. Mike Conley added 15 points and 10 assists.
Anthony Davis had 21 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, and Ryan Anderson scored 14 points for New Orleans.
The tight matinee featured 18 lead changes and 14 ties.
''I don't think we played great, but I thought we played well enough,'' Memphis coach Dave Joerger said.
Midrange jumpers from Holiday and Norris Cole helped the Pelicans to an 80-75 lead in the fourth quarter. But Memphis answered with a 10-1 run, including four points from Barnes.
Barnes had 12 points in the fourth, but New Orleans stayed close. Holiday's layup with 4.6 seconds left made it 100-99, setting the stage for Lee's final free throw and Gasol's rebound.
''We executed pretty well in the fourth quarter,'' Joerger said.
There were eight ties and six lead changes in the third quarter alone. Holiday's 3-pointer in the final seconds lifted the Pelicans to a 76-72 lead after three.
Cole and Eric Gordon each scored 10 points for New Orleans, which had won two in a row.
''We played hard and did everything we thought we needed to do to win the game,'' New Orleans coach Alvin Gentry said.
CONLEY'S DAY
Conley returned to the lineup after missing six games with a sore left Achilles and recorded his third double-double of the season. The point guard also was named one of the 30 finalists for the 2016 U.S. Olympic team earlier in the day.
''I was a little sore,'' Conley said. ''I hadn't had activity like that since I went down. As the game went on, it warmed up, but (after the game) it was pretty sore.''
TURNOVER TROUBLES
Several Pelicans and Gentry pointed to turnovers as the real problem. New Orleans, which averages 13.7 turnovers a game, committed 15, including a handful in the pivotal fourth quarter.
''You can't expect to win with all of the turnovers we had, unforced turnovers,'' Davis said.
Gentry added: ''We turned it over too much, more than we are accustomed to turning it over.''
