Tinsley unhurt after shooting

Dec 9, 2007 - 8:32 PM INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Indiana Pacers guard Jamaal Tinsley escaped uninjured in a shooting outside a downtown hotel Sunday.

Police said the shooting targeted Tinsley and several of his companions following a confrontation as they were leaving the Cloud 9 club.

While Tinsley was not harmed, Joey Qatato, who is the Pacers' equipment manager, was struck on both elbows as he sat with Tinsley in the player's Rolls Royce. Qatato was taken to Methodist Hospital, where he was treated and released.

According to police, an assault rifle was used in the shooting.

Tinsley's entourage had arrived at the club in three cars owned by the player - a Rolls Royce, Mercedes and Dodge Charger. Police said a group of people had gathered around the Rolls Royce and were giving Tinsley grief about his cars and earnings.

After leaving the club, Tinsley and his group realized they were being followed by two vehicles.

Tinsley and his group then headed for the Conrad Hotel, where the shooting began. Tinsley's Rolls Royce was peppered with bullets, and five bullet holes also were found in the Charger.

Two vehicles in Tinsley's group then took off after the shooters, and Tinsley's brother, James, fired at the attackers, according to police.

Police said Jamaal Tinsley was not involved in the chase.

This is not the first time trouble has found Jamaal Tinsley, who still is facing charges stemming from a bar fight nearly a year ago. Tinsley's teammate, Marquis Daniels, also was charged in that incident.

A grand jury indicted Tinsley on a felony charge of intimidation and misdemeanor counts of battery, disorderly conduct in connection with the February 6 incident at the 8 Seconds Saloon.

Tinsley is set to go on trial January 14.

The shooting is the second that targeted a professional athlete in less than two weeks.

In the early morning hours of November 26, Washington Redskins star safety Sean Taylor was shot in a botched burglary at his home. He died the following day at age 24.
