Durant apologizes for comments about India
Aug 12, 2017 - 10:10 PM Forward Kevin Durant of the NBA champion Golden State Warriors issued an apology for comments he claims were "taken out of context" regarding the development of basketball in India. In a Q&A with Durant that appeared in The Athletic earlier this week, he was quoted as saying that the country is "20 years behind in terms of knowledge and experience."
In a statement on Twitter, Durant said: "Sorry that my comments about India were taken out of context, I'm grateful for the time I've got to spend there and I'm really pissed about how my comments came off, that's my fault, should've worded that better. I spoke about the difference between my imagination and reality there in Delhi and about where the game is compared to the rest of the world. No offense from this side, I'm coming back out there for more camps and cool (stuff). Sorry ....."
Durant, the Most Valuable Player in the NBA Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers, also said in the Q&A that he was surprised to see so many underprivileged people in India eager to learn about basketball.
In addition, he talked about seeing cows in the streets, monkeys on the loose and hundreds of people on the side of the roads.
Durant returned on Thursday from his visit to India, where he promoted the building of community basketball courts, and said he hopes to return in the future.
No one has shouted yet.
