Report: Wade close to signing with Cavaliers
Sep 26, 2017 - 6:57 PM Only a few minor details remain before the expected reunion of free agent Dwyane Wade and LeBron James becomes official.ESPN reported Tuesday that Wade was likely to sign a contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers in the next day or two, pairing the friends and NBA champions as teammates once more. James and Wade were teammates with the Miami Heat and also with Team USA.
The overhauled roster in Cleveland includes Derrick Rose and Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Jose Calderon and Wade.
Kyrie Irving was dealt to the Boston Celtics in the trade that included Thomas and Crowder.
Wade, a 35-year-old shooting guard, was slated to make $23.8 million with the Bulls in 2017-18 but reached the buyout agreement with the Bulls after one season.
Wade gave up approximately $8 million in salary in order to obtain the buyout.
Wade tweeted his thanks to Chicago and the fans on Sunday night: "A Dream was fulfilled!!! Thank you Chicago!!!"
Wade has a long-standing relationship with James. Wade recently worked out with James and Rose in California.
"I would love to have D-Wade a part of this team," James said at NBA Media Day on Monday. "I think he brings another championship DNA, championship pedigree. He brings another playmaker to the team who can get guys involved, and make plays, and also just has a great basketball mind.
"I think it would be great to have him here. ... I've talked to D-Wade throughout the whole summer, and I probably will reach out to him as well, but it's really not up to me. It's up to D-Wade if he can clear waivers and then it's up to our front office. But I hope that we can bring him here. I would love to have him."
In addition to the Cavaliers, the San Antonio Spurs, Heat and Oklahoma City Thunder were considered contenders for Wade. Carmelo Anthony, traded to the Thunder from the New York Knicks on Monday, openly pleaded with Wade to come to Oklahoma City at his introductory press conference.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the Golden State Warriors were also in contact with Wade about joining their superstar-laden championship roster.
Wade averaged 18.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.8 assists in 60 games with the Bulls last season.
