Top 2 NBA Summer League Betting Odds & Picks for Sunday (7/17)

Jul 17, 2022 - 11:00 AM

10 days after it started, the NBA summer league in Las Vegas will come to an end on Sunday, as the championship game is scheduled for 3:00 PM EST at the Thomas & Mack Center. Broadcast on ESPN, the Portland Trail Blazers will take on the New York Knicks to crown this summer’s champion.

Portland Trail Blazers vs. New York Knicks

Five other teams finished qualifying with a record of 3-1, but the Trail Blazers and Knicks advanced to the title game, winning the tiebreaker via point differential. For the Knicks, their 95.3 points per game were good enough for 3rd in the league, while they kept opponents to just 83.5 points per game.

For the Trail Blazers, the defense was the name of the game, keeping opponents to just 75.8 points per game (8.2 differential). Having already met once this summer, the Knicks Quentin Grimes led all scorers with 24, while Trendon Watford had his best game in a Trail Blazers uniform with 18 points and six boards.

With the potential of Donovan Mitchell coming this summer, Knicks fans need the role players to put around him, and second-year player Grimes is giving them something to be excited about. Averaging 23.5 points per game this summer, Grimes ranks in the top five of all summer league players and will compete for time come training camp.

Portland has plenty to be excited about with the re-signing of Dame Lillard last week, as second-round player Keon Johnson has emerged this summer (17.3 points per game) as a potential piece to put around him.

This summer, however, the Trail Blazer’s 84 points per game rank amongst the worst in the league, and I think the Knicks, led by another big game from Grimes, get this one done in Las Vegas for their first summer league title.

Bet: Knicks -2.5 (-110 at DraftKings

Washington Wizards vs. Golden State Warriors

While the championship game will get things started on Sunday, there are plenty of other games going on throughout the day, and the Wizards vs. Warriors is an interesting one I’m keyed in on. Featuring one of the more under-the-radar trades last season that sent Otto Porter Jr. to Golden State, these are two teams who know each other’s personnel well, and I expect a closer contest.

The Wizards come into this game averaging 95.3 points per game, good enough for fourth in the league. On the other hand, the Warriors have struggled to score buckets, ranking towards the bottom half of the league with just 87 points per game.

I like for the Wizards, led by Jordan Schakel, to get it done to close out the summer in Las Vegas.

Bet: Wizards +3.5 (-110 at DraftKings)
