Late shot, steal lift Albany past American 51-50
Nov 17, 2009 - 4:09 AM WASHINGTON, D.C.(AP) -- Tim Ambrose followed up Scotty McRae's missed jump shot with a layup with 1:58 left to play to give Albany (N.Y.) a 51-50 win over American University on Monday night.Mike Johnson then intercepted an Eagles' pass attempt with 12 seconds to play, setting up a free throw by Ambrose. He missed the front end of a one-and-one, but American's Daniel Munoz missed a jumper at the other end.
The Great Danes (1-2) trailed 41-34 midway through the second half before scoring nine straight points. McRae put Albany ahead 43-41 for its first lead of the half on a jump shot with 10:11 remaining in the game.
McRae tallied 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting, grabbed seven rebounds and had two blocks. Ambrose, who scored 10 points in the second half, also finished with 14.
The Eagles (0-2) were led by Stephen Lumpkins with 12 points and Simon McCormack with 10.
