Jayhawks rout Longhorns

Feb 23, 2014 - 5:20 AM Lawrence, KS (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrew Wiggins had 21 points and six rebounds as No. 8 Kansas crushed 19th-ranked Texas, 85-54, in a Big 12 battle.

Frank Mason scored 14 points, while Joel Embiid added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Jayhawks (21-6, 12-2 Big 12), who have won three straight and five of six. Kansas got revenge for an 81-69 loss at Texas three weeks ago.

"We were so geeked up and amped up and played so well early," said Kansas head coach Bill Self. "It was unbelievable, and our guys played so good. Everybody played great."

Jonathan Holmes had 17 points and six rebounds, and Cameron Ridley gave 11 points and six boards for the Longhorns (20-7, 9-5), who have dropped their past two.

"They were really good obviously," said Texas head coach Rick Barnes. "You've got to know that after we played as well as we did against them the first time that they were going to be ready to play and we didn't come out as much as we talked about."

After Javan Felix hit a jumper 6 1/2 minutes in to tie the game at 10 for Texas, the Longhorns didn't get another point for over eight minutes.

Kansas took advantage of the poor shooting from Texas and scored 18 straight points. Ellis hit a pair of free throws for a 28-10 lead with 5 1/2 minutes to play in the half.

Connor Lammert then hit a 3-pointer to finally stop the bleeding for the Longhorns, but the Jayhawks scored the next seven points and eventually took a 46-18 lead into the break.

The Jayhawks cruised in the second half, as their lead never dropped below 24, and reached as high as 31 down the stretch.
