Kansas State stuns No. 6 Oklahoma State
Jan 5, 2014 - 4:25 AM Manhattan, KS (SportsNetwork.com) - Marcus Foster had 17 points and eight rebounds as the Kansas State Wildcats took down the sixth-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys, 74-71, on Saturday.Nino Williams added 15 points for the Wildcats (11-3, 1-0 Big 12), who have won nine in a row. Thomas Gipson tallied 10 points and 11 boards.
"The guys were definitely excited in the locker room," Kansas State coach Bruce Weber said. "Mississippi was huge, Gonzaga was pretty big, George Washington too, but this was a whole different step for us."
Le'Bryan Nash ended with 20 points for the Cowboys (12-2, 0-1), who had a five-game winning streak snapped. Markel Brown and Marcus Smart donated 16 and 15 points, respectively, with Brown also pulling down nine boards.
Trailing 60-57 with 5:45 to play, Kansas State went on an 8-0 run. Shane Southwell made two free throws to give the Wildcats the lead for good and Foster's layup with 3:47 remaining gave the home team a 65-60 edge.
Oklahoma State responded with a 6-2 spurt to get within one. Nash's jumper and layup around Jevon Thomas' jumper cut the gap to 67-66.
Gipson followed with a layup to give Kansas State a three-point margin. Southwell missed a 3-point try for the Wildcats and Nash was fouled on the rebound. Nash made two free throws with 35.2 seconds left to get the visitors within 69-68.
Gipson came right back with two free throws of his own to make it a three- point contest again. After Nash missed a shot from beyond the arc, Williams went 1-of-2 from the charity stripe with 13.5 ticks to go.
Phil Forte made a 3-pointer to keep Oklahoma State alive. Williams, however, made two free throws to make it a 74-71 contest. Smart raced up court and threw up a running 3-point try as the final buzzer sounded, but it clanked harmlessly off the rim and fell to the court.
"It was an exciting, hard-fought game with two teams that I thought played very hard," Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford said.
Oklahoma State held a 38-37 lead following a back-and-forth first half.
The second period was much like the first, with neither team leading by more than five.
