Providence upsets No. 20 Creighton

Jan 19, 2014 - 6:37 AM Providence, RI (SportsNetwork.com) - Bryce Cotton had 23 points and six assists in the Providence Friars' 81-68 rout of the 20th-ranked Creighton Bluejays on Saturday.

LaDontae Henton added 19 points and six rebounds for the Friars (13-5, 3-2 Big East), who have won three in a row. Kadeem Batts tallied 13 points and nine boards.

"Coming off of our game against St. John's, double-overtime, everyone keeps asking 'Are the kids tired?', but I think they're just excited. This shows you the depth of our league and how hard it is to win on the road," Friars coach Ed Cooley said.

Doug McDermott ended with 21 points and seven rebounds for the Bluejays (15-3, 5-1), who had a 10-game winning streak snapped. Devin Brooks donated 10 points.

Providence never looked back after Tyler Harris scored the game's first points 1:04 into the contest.

Creighton kept it close in the first half, but the Friars ended the period on an 8-2 spurt. Ted Bancroft's jumper with 38 seconds to go made it a 37-30 game.

Providence started the second half on an 18-5 run to build a 20-point margin. Josh Fortune tallied five points during the surge, including a layup with 13:51 remaining to make it 55-35.

Creighton managed to get within nine, 73-64, with 1:35 to play, but the Friars closed out the game at the foul line.
