Harrison helps St. John's top No. 12 Creighton
Feb 10, 2014 - 4:32 AM New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - D'Angelo Harrison scored 19 points to lead St. John's to a 70-65 win over No. 12 Creighton on Sunday at Madison Square Garden.Chris Obekpa had 11 points as the only other player in double figures for the Red Storm (15-9, 5-6 Big East). The win marked the 200th of St. John's head coach Steve Lavin's career.
Doug McDermott led all scorers with 25 points in defeat. St. John's Jakarr Sampson had the assignment of guarding one of the nation's top scorers and did an excellent job in doing so.
Sampson didn't allow a single shot attempt from McDermott in the final 8 1/2 minutes.
"He's (McDermott) a really good player," Sampson admitted. "This whole game all I wanted to focus on was defense and the defensive end of the floor."
Grant Gibbs recorded a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double and Austin Chatman added 10 points for the Blue Jays (19-4, 9-2), who had their four-game winning streak snapped.
St. Johns won its third consecutive game in large part because it held Creighton, the best 3-point shooting team in the country coming in, to 5-of-22 (22.7 percent) shooting from beyond the arc, nearly 20 percent below its season average.
McDermott's last shot attempt, a successful jumper, broke a 57-57 tie. St. John's then scored five straight to take a three point lead with just under 5 1/2 minutes to play in the contest.
Chatman's free throw with 2:18 left gave the Blue Jays a 63-62 edge, but Harrison buried a 3 on the next trip down the floor which proved to be the difference with just over two minutes left.
Earlier, Harrison made a pair of free throws to help the Red Storm to a 40-33 lead with 1 1/2 remaining in the first half. Chatman closed the first half scoring with a 3 in the closing seconds to cut the deficit to four at the break.
"That was a great college basketball game," said Creighton coach Greg McDermott. "I didn't feel like we were as engaged defensively as we needed to be on the road against a good St. John's team."
