Stauskas helps Michigan defeat Indiana
Mar 9, 2014 - 6:52 AM Ann Arbor, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Nik Stauskas put the finishing touches on a terrific regular season, depositing 21 points in 12th-ranked Michigan's 84-80 triumph over Indiana from Crisler Center.Stauskas reached double figures for the eighth consecutive game for the Wolverines (23-7, 15-3 Big Ten), who had already clinched the outright Big Ten regular season title. Glenn Robinson III added 20 points and Jordan Morgan shot 7-of-8 for 15 points and 10 rebounds.
"Just happy to get the win," said Morgan, who played his final home game.
Will Sheehey paced Indiana (17-14, 7-11) with 17 points, while Troy Williams and Yogi Ferrell netted 16 apiece as the Hoosiers' three-game winning streak over the Maize and Blue came to an end.
Indiana came out as the aggressors, getting to the rim at will during the early portion of the game. Sheehey and Ferrell each sprinkled in a 3-pointer during the Hoosiers' 9-for-9 start from the field. Sheehey and Williams converted consecutive alley-oop layups for a 22-12 lead just over seven minutes in.
"Our guys were great," said Indiana head coach Tom Crean. "They were really locked in and ready to go. We feel like we played our best basketball, at least I do."
The Wolverines cut into their deficit over the rest of the first half but still trailed 42-36 at intermission.
Stauskas made three contested layups in the first three minutes of the second half. Robinson III then hit a pair of jumpers on the back end of an 8-0 run, which gave the hosts their first lead of the period, 50-48.
Morgan's three-point play ignited another 8-0 Wolverines flurry, extending the spread to 67-58 with seven minutes to go.
Stauskas and Spike Albrecht each made a pair of free throws for a 73-62 margin, but the Hoosiers came storming back. Ferrell followed a Williams dunk with a deep triple just before the final media timeout to draw the visitors within six.
Stanford Robinson followed another Williams jam with a jumper with a minute and a half remaining, knotting the score at 75-apiece.
With the game on the line, Stauskas drove right and kicked to a wide open Robinson III, who potted the corner trey to restore Michigan's lead. Derrick Walton Jr., Albrecht and Stauskas finished it with six straight free throws in the final minute.
