Newbill helps Penn State knock off No. 24 Ohio StateJan 30, 2014 - 5:30 AM Columbus, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - D.J. Newbill scored a game-high 25 points and knocked down the game-winner late in overtime as Penn State shocked 24th- ranked Ohio State with a 71-70 triumph on Wednesday.
Ohio State (16-5, 3-5 Big Ten) led by three late in the extra session when Newbill slashed through the defense late in the shot clock and converted a layup with 45 seconds to play. The Buckeyes turned it over at the other end, and Newbill challenged the league's best on-ball defender Aaron Craft with a crossover and pull-up jumper, which hit all net with 1.9 seconds to play.
Craft received the ensuing inbounds pass out of a timeout but took one too many dribbles and the clock ran out on OSU, which saw its 18-game winning streak over the Nittany Lions (11-10, 2-6) come to an end.
"We weren't the tougher basketball team tonight," said Craft. "That's what it comes down to."
Brandon Taylor added 19 points for Penn State and Tim Frazier tallied eight points with 10 rebounds and seven assists in the Lions' second straight win on the heels of six straight losses to begin conference play.
"We came in here just trying to get better and we came out with a win," said Penn State head coach Pat Chambers. "We hit some good shots and made some good stops. We're a new team."
LaQuinton Ross and Lenzelle Smith, Jr. netted 16 and 15 points, respectively, in Ohio State's fifth setback in its last six games.
The Buckeyes led 57-48 after Trey McDonald's layup at 8:29 but went nearly eight minutes without a field goal after that. The lead grew to 11 on a pair of Ross free throws, but Newbill helped lead the Penn State charge. His corner 3 with 1:08 to play capped a 14-3 run and knotted the score at 62-apiece.
Craft finally broke the spell with his lefty layup with 36 seconds left and Smith split a pair at the line moments later for a three-point margin, but Newbill again stepped up and tied it when he took a handoff on the left wing and drilled a trey. OSU missed two looks in the final seconds and five extra minutes were needed.
Earlier, Penn State made its first four shots from the floor and hit 54.2 percent in the opening 20 minutes but turned it over five times for nine Buckeyes' points and was outscored 16-10 in the paint. OSU owned a 35-31 edge at the break.
Penn State had won just once in its last 21 conference road games entering play ... Graham Woodward scored 11 points for PSU ... Ohio State attempted 20 more free throws (29-9) than Penn State ... There were 11 lead changes and nine ties.
