Cal continues dominance over Oregon

Jan 10, 2014 - 8:04 AM Eugene, OR (SportsNetwork.com) - California has been far from a welcoming sight on Oregon's schedule over the past few years.

Jordan Mathews scored 20 of his career-high 32 points in the first half to help lead California to its 12th straight win over No. 17 Oregon with a 96-83 decision from Matthew Knight Arena.

Justin Cobbs scored 20 points with 11 assists, while Richard Solomon posted 16 points with nine rebounds for the Bears (11-4, 2-0 Pac-12), who snapped Oregon's 11-game home winning streak in the process. The Ducks' last loss on their home floor came to none other than California via a 48-46 setback on Feb. 21 of last season.

Tyrone Wallace added 14 points, while David Kravish tallied 12 points to go along with eight rebounds and three blocks in the win.

"They were very aggressive on over-play, so it opened up some lanes for us," Cal head coach Mike Montgomery said. "We were able to get inside."

Joseph Young scored a team-high 29 points on 16-of-17 shooting from the free- throw line and Mike Moser recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds for Oregon (13-2, 1-2), which has dropped two straight in conference following a 100-91 loss over then-No. 20 Colorado over the weekend.

Johnathan Loyd and Damyean Dotson scored 14 and 10 points, respectively, in defeat.

"We just didn't seem to have much bounce," Oregon head coach Dana Altman said. "We gave up a lot of easy baskets right from the start. Our guys were prepared and ready to play, we just didn't execute defensively."

Mathews opened the second half with a 3-pointer and Oregon responded with a 10-0 run that Young capped with a jumper to give the Ducks a 52-49 lead.

The game was back-and-forth from there until Cal used an 8-0 run courtesy of three-point plays from Solomon and Wallace to give the Bears a 67-60 cushion.

Cal led 71-67 when Loyd jumped a pass from Wallace and raced down the floor for a layup to make it a one-possession game with 7:16 to play.

Cobbs and Mathews each buried a pair at the line to push the lead back to six, 75-69, but Oregon would not wilt.

Young hit three free throws in four attempts to make it a three-point game with 5 1/2 minutes left.

With Cal leading 76-74, Mathews hit a deep 3 from the top of the arc and then Cobbs made a tough layup in traffic on the following possession to make it an 81-74 game.

Solomon added a dunk on a nice pick-and-roll with Cobbs later in the half that gave the Bears an 87-77 advantage with just under three minutes left.

Young then hit another pair at the line, but Kravish and Mathews hit jumpers from the foul line on successive possessions to all but seal it for California with 1:40 left.

Earlier, Young made a pair at the line to tie the game at 36-36 before Kravish opened an 8-0 run with a layup. Oregon pulled within four at the break after Moser made a deep 3 from the top of the circle to cut the deficit to 46-42.
