BYU downs No. 25 Gonzaga

Feb 21, 2014 - 7:36 AM Provo, UT (SportsNetwork.com) - Anson Winder scored 17 points and BYU picked up a signature win, 73-65, over No. 25 Gonzaga on Thursday.

The Cougars (19-10, 11-5 WCC) forced 16 turnovers and never trailed in the second half en route to their sixth win in the last seven games.

Matt Carlino supplied 15 points, Eric Mika added 13 and Tyler Haws had 12 in the victory.

"It was a hard-fought, aggressive game with both teams attacking," BYU coach Dave Rose said. "There were times when you could really tell that the players on both teams really wanted to win. Those are fun games to be involved with as a coach. You see guys putting it all out there for the team."

Sam Dower and Kevin Pangos netted 14 and 13 points, respectively, for the Bulldogs (23-5, 13-2), whose magic number to win the West Coast Conference regular season crown outright remains one with three games remaining.

BYU controlled play for most of the first half, even leading by double digits before a late 15-2 Gonzaga run gave the Bulldogs a 39-36 lead.

Haws sent the game into halftime even at 39 with a 3-pointer, and the Cougars scored the first six points of the second half and stayed in front the rest of the way.

Two Kyle Dranginis free throws with under four minutes to play had Gonzaga within 64-60, but Carlino put in consecutive buckets around a turnover to rebuild a healthy lead, and the Cougars held on from there.
