Wichita State takes down Northern Iowa

Jan 5, 2014 - 9:55 PM Wichita, KS (SportsNetwork.com) - Fred VanVleet netted a game-high 22 points and pulled down six rebounds, as No. 8 Wichita State remained unbeaten on the season with a 67-53 win over Northern Iowa on Sunday at Charles Koch Arena.

Cleanthony Early added 18 points and seven boards for the Shockers (15-0, 2-0 MVC), who set a school record with their 15th straight victory while continuing their best start in program history.

Deon Mitchell led Northern Iowa (7-7, 1-1) with 16 points, while Jeremy Morgan registered seven points off the bench for the Panthers, who were coming off an 80-46 win over Bradley in their conference opener.

Matt Bohannon bookended a 12-2 start for the Panthers with a pair of 3- pointers, but the Shockers responded with a 12-2 surge of their own to pull even at 14-14 with 11 minutes left in the half.

After Northern Iowa netted the game's next five points, VanVleet tallied nine points in a 16-3 half-closing run that sent the Shockers into the break with a 30-22 cushion.

Early helped extend the lead early in the second with five straight points, as his 3-pointer pushed the margin to 43-33 with 14:09 left.

After the teams exchanged 6-0 runs, Nate Buss buried a 3-pointer to pull the Panthers within seven, but a 10-3 Shockers swing capped by a VanVleet layup made it 57-44 with just under 6 1/2 minutes remaining.

Northern Iowa failed to get closer than 12 the rest of the way.
