Virginia dominates Wake Forest

Feb 26, 2015 - 4:08 AM Winston-Salem, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - After needing a stop on its final defensive possession to edge Wake Forest in their last meeting, No. 2 Virginia dominated from the opening tip in its 70-34 win over the Demon Deacons on Wednesday night.

It took over three minutes for the Cavaliers (26-1, 14-1 ACC) to hit their first shot from the floor, but that bucket gave them the lead for good. All 11 Cavs that suited up scored, led by Anthony Gill's 11 points.

On Feb. 14, Virginia held on to beat Wake Forest 61-60 when Malcolm Brogdon stole the ball from Cody Miller-McIntyre as time expired.

"I thought defensively we played a little better than we did last time," said Virginia coach Tony Bennett.

The Demon Deacons (12-16, 4-11) shot just 21.8 percent and went 4-of-22 from 3-point range. Konstantinos Mitoglou paced Wake Forest with 10 points, but eight of those came in the closing minutes with the game out of reach.

"At the end of the game, they've got the game in control and they're still flying around defensively. They're still getting deflections, they're still blocking shots, they're still getting out on the break," said Wake Forest coach Danny Manning. "That's what the number two team in the country does."

Aaron Rountree's powerful dunk at 12:58 temporarily brought the Demon Deacons within one. However, the rout was on when Virginia followed with a 9-0 run, capped by Devon Hall's 3.

At the other end of the floor, the Cavs' trademark defense began locking down the Demon Deacons. They made just 3-of-17 shots the rest of the way as Virginia took a 36-15 lead into the break. It was Wake Forest's lowest-scoring half of the season.

Halftime did not disrupt Virginia's rhythm at all. The Cavs scored the first five points of the half and yielded just two shots from the floor before forcing the Demon Deacons into another shooting drought.

Wake Forest missed its next 13 shots as Virginia ran its lead to a game-high 38 points. Miller-McIntyre finally hit a 3 with 7:01 to play to end the cold spell.

Virginia had lost 10 in a row at Wake Forest ... The Cavs were without starting guard London Perrantes, who is day-to-day with a broken nose and mild concussion ... Wake Forest's Devin Thomas finished with two points after scoring the first basket of the game ... Virginia hosts rival Virginia Tech on Saturday while Wake Forest takes on Pittsburgh on Sunday.
