Iowa State cruises past West Virginia

Feb 15, 2015 - 5:29 AM Ames, IA (SportsNetwork.com) - Monte Morris scored 19 points and handed out five assists in 14th-ranked Iowa State's 79-59 win over No. 21 West Virginia on Saturday.

Abdel Nader had 16 points, Jameel McKay posted 12 points with eight rebounds and Georges Niang chipped in 11 points for the Cyclones (18-6, 8-4 Big 12).

"I thought our mindset going into this game was really good. Now we got to find a way to take this on the road," Cyclones coach Fred Hoiberg said.

Juwan Staten was the only Mountaineer to reach double figures with 16 points.

West Virginia (19-6, 7-5) has dropped three of its last four games.

"We give up too many offensive rebounds," WVU coach Bob Huggins said. "Our poor shooting has led to numerous transition baskets."

Staten and Gary Browne hit consecutive 3-pointers to give the Mountaineers their first lead of the day at 21-19. Jonathan Holton capped the quick 8-0 run with a pair of free throws, but Iowa State regained the lead with a 6-0 spurt.

Elijah Macon's dunk later in the half pushed West Virginia ahead by one, then Matt Thomas hit a 3 to cap a 7-0 burst which helped the hosts to a 36-32 lead at the half.

The Mountaineers had trouble putting the ball in the basket in the second half. Staten converted the only bucket for West Virginia over the first seven minutes of the frame as Iowa State built a double-digit lead. Morris hit successive 3-pointers before Niang's jumper made it 50-34 with about 13 minutes left in the half.

Staten assisted on a pair of triples from Chase Connor to keep the visitors within striking distance, but Iowa State maintained a comfortable edge down the stretch.
