Layman's double-double lifts Maryland past OK State

Dec 21, 2014 - 9:57 PM Stillwater, OK (SportsNetwork.com) - Jake Layman's first career double-double helped No. 17 Maryland overcome a late rally and top Oklahoma State, 73-64, in a non-conference showdown on Sunday.

Layman shot 7-for-12, finishing with 21 points and 11 rebounds in Maryland's fourth straight win following an 11-point loss to Virginia on Dec. 3. The Terrapins (11-1) won seven straight to open the season.

Freshman Melo Trimble continued his strong play at point guard, making all seven of his free throws and netting 15 points with four assists, and fellow rookie Jared Nickens scored 11.

Le'Bryan Nash had 17 points and nine boards to pace Oklahoma State (9-2), losers in two of four after also starting the season 7-0.

OSU led 18-14 following Michael Cobbins' dunk at 7:22 of the first half.

Maryland then scored 18 points in the final 6:47 of the half to take a 32-27 lead into halftime.

Nickens hit a pair of 3s to bookend an 8-0 Terps run to open the second half. The lead grew to 17 points on multiple occasions, but OSU mounted a comeback to make things interesting down the stretch.

Anthony Hickey's triple with 54 seconds left had the Cowboys within six. Phil Forte then hit from deep with 15 seconds to play to make it a five-point game.

But Trimble and Richaud Pack made six free throws in the final 27 seconds to hold them off.
