No. 12 Maryland holds off Minnesota
Jan 4, 2015 - 12:28 AM College Park, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Melo Trimble scored 20 points and the 12th-ranked Maryland Terrapins held off the Minnesota Golden Gophers 70-58 on Saturday afternoon.Trimble went 5-of-15 from the floor and 1-of-8 from beyond the arc for the Terrapins (14-1, 2-0 Big Ten), who have won seven in a row. Jake Layman and Dez Wells each had 12 points.
Maurice Walker ended with 20 points, 10 rebounds, three blocks and two steals for the Gophers (11-4, 0-2), who have dropped two straight since an eight-game winning streak. Carlos Morris contributed 18 points, six boards and two steals.
Minnesota shot just 33.8 percent from the field and went 3-of-22 from three- point range.
"Credit to Maryland, they really get after it and are a talented team. We just didn't bring it today," Walker said.
With the score tied at 15-15, the Terrapins went on a 17-2 run. Damonte Dodd tallied six points during the surge, including a layup with 7:33 left in the first half to make it a 32-17 game.
The Golden Gophers ended the frame on a 16-4 spurt, however, to get within 36-33.
"The only bad part of the game was their run in the first half," Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon said. "It was our first Big Ten home game and the guys were a little bit nervous, but they gained some confidence."
Maryland created some distance once again with a 11-2 run to start the second half. Trimble scored six points during the burst that Wells capped with a layup for a 47-35 edge.
The Golden Gophers never got closer than seven the rest of the way.
