Davis, LSU blast Mississippi Valley State
Dec 29, 2006 - 8:23 AM BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (Ticker) -- Glen 'Big Baby' Davis and Louisiana State are slowly putting distance between themselves and a disappointing loss from more than a week ago.Davis scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as No. 19 LSU posted a 92-58 rout over Mississippi Valley State in the second round of the Hispanic College Funds Classic.
Tasmin Mitchell had 17 points and Dameon Mason added 13 for the Tigers, who have won three straight after suffering a 16-point loss at the hands of Washington on December 20.
In that 88-72 loss, Davis was held to eight points by the Huskies defense and was outplayed by freshman center Spencer Hawes. Against the Delta Devils, however, the 6-9, 295-pound junior shot 7-of-11 from the field. He had 12 points before halftime, helping the Tigers grab a 47-21 lead.
"I thought that was the best energy level I have seen out of Glen Davis," said LSU coach John Brady, who was ejected from the contest midway through the second half for arguing with an official.
Darnell Lazare added 10 points and seven rebounds for LSU, which shot 57 percent (35-of-52).
Larry Cox scored nine points and three other players added seven for Mississippi Valley State (3-8), which made just eight first-half field goals and finished the game shooting 40 percent (21-of-53).
"I thought our team defended exceptionally well," Brady said. "I thought we controlled the game defensively from the pressure we supplied."
LSU next will face Samford in this event on Friday.
"Hopefully we can defend them well, because they do a lot of things offensively," Brady said. "They do a lot of cutting, moving and passing. I am hoping defensively we can still have the same intensity we had in tonight's game."
