UNLV stuns No. 3 Arizona
Dec 24, 2014 - 6:29 AM Las Vegas, NV (SportsNetwork.com) - No. 3 Arizona had won 39 consecutive non- conference games in the regular season, the longest active streak in Division I men's basketball.That run is now over thanks to a 71-67 loss to UNLV on Tuesday.
Christian Wood scored a career-high 24 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Runnin' Rebels (8-3), who bounced back from a 59-46 loss to Utah on Saturday. Rashad Vaughn tallied 21 points and three steals.
T.J. McConnell ended with 14 points, seven assists and three steals for the Wildcats (12-1), who dropped a non-conference game in the regular season for the first time since a 71-60 loss to Gonzaga in Seattle on Dec. 17, 2011.
Stanley Johnson contributed 13 points, 13 rebounds and three steals for Arizona. Brandon Ashley also had 13 points.
Trailing 61-56 with 7:44 to play, UNLV went on a 12-2 run to take the lead for good. Wood tallied six points during the surge that Vaughn capped with a jumper for a 68-63 edge.
Ashley was good on two free throws and McConnell made a layup around two UNLV turnovers to get Arizona within one with 59.7 seconds remaining. Cody Doolin committed another turnover for the Runnin' Rebels, but Johnson missed an easy layup.
Arizona had another chance to take the lead after Vaughn missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Ashley came down with the defensive rebound before missing a 3- pointer.
Patrick McCaw made 1-of-2 free throws with 6.6 seconds left to make it 69-67 UNLV. Johnson turned the ball over and McCaw added two free throws with 0.7 seconds to go.
The Wildcats led for a majority of the first half and took a 41-36 lead into the locker room. UNLV tied the game at 50 with 13:46 to play.

UNLV holds a 12-7 lead in the all-time series with Arizona ... Wildcats center Kaleb Tarczewski was called for a Flagrant 1 foul for hitting Dwayne Morgan in the face with an elbow while trying to clear space after a rebound ... Gabe York and Tarczewski had 11 and 10 points, respectively ... McCaw ended with 13 points and seven rebounds.
