BYU ends No. 3 Gonzaga's 41-game home win streak

Mar 1, 2015 - 6:47 AM Spokane, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Kyle Collinsworth finished with 20 points and eight rebounds as BYU pulled off a memorable upset over third-ranked Gonzaga for a 73-70 win on Saturday.

Gonzaga suffered just its second loss of the season and had three lengthy winning streaks come to an end.

The Bulldogs entered the game with a school-record 22 straight wins, the nation's longest home winning streak at 41 games in a row and 22 consecutive conference victories.

Skyler Halford scored 14 points, while Chase Fischer and Tyler Haws netted 13 and 10 points, respectively, for the Cougars (23-8, 13-5 WCC), who won their first game over a team ranked third or higher since a win over No. 2 UCLA on Nov. 27, 1981.

"We were so engaged tonight from the very tip," BYU head coach Dave Rose said. "I don't know if it's our best defensive effort, but the focus we had and the desire and urgency was the best of the season."

Byron Wesley paced Gonzaga (29-2. 17-1) with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Domantas Sabonis scored 12 with eight boards in the loss.

"We have to get back to being the aggressor," said Bulldogs head coach Mark Few. "This time of year, the most aggressive team is going to win."

With five minutes remaining, Sabonis made a layup, but failed to complete a three-point play. He split a pair of free throws moments later to cut the deficit to 65-59.

Gary Bell Jr.'s first made shot of the day was a timely one, as his deep 3- pointer cut Gonzaga's deficit to 69-64 with 1:52 remaining.

BYU turned the ball over on a shot clock violation coming out of a timeout and Wesley and Kyle Dranginis each made a pair of free throws around a Collinsworth layup to get the Bulldogs within 71-68 with seven seconds left.

Gonzaga quickly fouled Haws, who missed both free throws. Eric McClellan went the other way, but was fouled before getting a shot off. McClellan made both shots, but was countered by Ryan Andrus, who also made a pair at the line with 1.5 seconds left.

Kyle Wiltjer took the ensuing inbounds pass for the Bulldogs and quickly threw up a shot from his side of the court, but the ball bounced off the rim as time expired.

The Cougars jumped out to an 11-2 lead, but Gonzaga battled back as they scored the final seven points of the first half and Kevin Pangos' jumper with five seconds remaining sent the game tied at 36-36 heading into the break.

Fischer hit a trey just over three minutes into the second half, giving BYU a 45-40 lead. The Cougars maintained their lead and Haws gave them a 57-47 advantage midway through the final frame with four straight points.

Gonzaga lost for the first time at home since Dec. 8, 2012 against Illinois ... The Cougars won their sixth straight game ... Gonzaga made 14-of-21 free throws ... BYU shot 42.4 percent from the field and made 7-of-16 shots from beyond the arc.
