Summers helps Michigan State take down South Carolina

Nov 17, 2010 - 8:33 AM East Lansing, MI (Sports Network) - Durrell Summers' 22 points and six rebounds helped second-ranked Michigan State past South Carolina, 82-73, at the Breslin Center.

Draymond Green had a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds while Delvon Roe chipped in 15 points for Michigan State (2-0), which was coming off an easy win, 96-66, over Eastern Michigan on Friday.

"I don't want to take anything away from Darrin Horn, because he is not only a friend, but I thought his team did a heck of a job, but I was very disappointed in mine," Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo said. "We got screwed up with some lineups in there and part of the distractions that we deal with. I felt sorry for Korie (Lucious) because I think he was pressing to come back and play well, and struggled. Kalin (Lucas) hurt his ankle, it wasn't his Achilles, he just rolled it a little bit."

Bruce Ellington led South Carolina (1-1) with 22 points. Brian Richardson scored 11 points for the Gamecocks, who opened their season with a 94-79 win over Elon last Friday.

The game was tightly played the first 12 minutes and South Carolina had a 21-19 lead after Ramon Galloway drilled a three-pointer. But Michigan State went on a 23-4 run to finish out the final 8 1/2 minutes of the half. The run was started with a Keith Appling three-pointer and capped by two Roe free throws with 1:14 left as the Spartans took a 42-25 lead into the break.

During the second half, the Gamecocks kept within striking distance. Stephen Spinella made a three-pointer with 15:49 left in the contest and 35 seconds later, Galloway hit a free throw to make it an eight-point game, 48-40.

South Carolina remained within eight with 2 1/2 minutes left. Damontre Harris had an easy dunk after Roe tried to save a rebound from falling out of bounds and threw it directly to Harris below the basket.

Ellington hit a three-pointer and the visitors trimmed their deficit to 71-65 with 2:13 on the clock. However, after Auston Thorton's triple, Roe found Green wide open for an easy dunk with 57 seconds left for 78-67 Spartans lead.

Michigan State was able to fend off any hopes for a South Carolina comeback and sealed the win from the charity strip inside the final minute.

"We knew coming into this game that the challenge wasn't just the players versus the players, we needed the X's and O's," South Carolina head coach Darrin Horn said. "Sixteen years of building a program, this environment, which is tremendous, and our guys being able to deal with that and handle it. I have the utmost respect for Coach Izzo. This is what we want our program to look like, hopefully 12 to 16 years from now, where we are committed to a style of play, and we believe in that."
