No. 1 Duke blasts Colgate

Nov 20, 2010 - 5:15 AM Durham, NC (Sports Network) - Kyle Singler ended with 18 points and nine rebounds, leading top-ranked Duke in a 110-58 rout of Colgate at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Nolan Smith scored 16 points with nine assists for the Blue Devils (3-0), who began the season with blowout wins over Princeton and Miami-Ohio. Andre Dawkins also netted 16 points in the victory, while freshman Kyrie Irving finished with 13 points and nine assists.

"Colgate played their butts off and we did, too," said Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski. "We just have more weapons, you know, and once we started hitting threes the points just kind of go up there real quick, and we are sharing the ball. From our two starting guards, to get 18 assists in a game like this is really very, very good, just really good."

Yaw Gyawu had nine points and six rebounds for Colgate (0-3), which dropped its first two games by a combined five points.

"Duke just does a tremendous job with their ball pressure and their denials," Colgate head coach Emmett Davis said. "They forced a lot of turnovers. We didn't do a good job in our zone at times, and we left guys open, which was disappointing."

It was still a two-possession game with a little more than 12 minutes left in the opening half, as a Brandon James jumper got the Raiders within 21-15.

But the Blue Devils followed with a 15-2 run to start to pull away. Miles Plumlee made 1-of-2 from the line with 6:15 left in the half to end the rally and provide a 36-17 advantage.

Duke held a 44-26 lead at the break and poured on the offense shortly into the second half.

The Blue Devils needed only four minutes to go on an 18-1 run, which Dawkins' three ended with 15 1/2 minutes to play. The shot made it a 65-30 game, and Duke cruised to the finish.
