Duke handles Kansas State to get Coach K win No. 800
Nov 24, 2010 - 8:24 AM Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Nolan Smith and sensational freshman Kyrie Irving both scored 17 points, as top-ranked Duke beat No. 4 Kansas State, 82-68, in the championship game of the CBE Classic.Mike Krzyzewski notched his 800th career win at Duke, becoming just the fifth coach in NCAA history to win as many games at one school.
"Duke has afforded me an opportunity to recruit great kids," Krzyzewski said. "The kind of kids that I feel really comfortable coaching at a high caliber. You're better able to form a team with kids who have good character."
Irving added six rebounds and five assists for the Blue Devils (5-0), who got 11 points apiece from Kyle Singler and Andre Dawkins.
Curtis Kelly put up a game-high 19 points for the Wildcats (4-1), who fell to 3-14 all-time against top-ranked opponents. Jacob Pullen was held to just four points on 1-of-12 shooting, including 1-of-8 from three-point range, in defeat.
"If there's one (team) better than (Duke), I don't want to play them. They're good," Kansas State head coach Frank Martin said.
Down 13-12, the Blue Devils took the lead for good on a 9-0 run that started with a four-point play by Seth Curry.
K-State trailed 47-39 at halftime and was within 48-43 early in the second stanza on a pair of Jamar Samuels free throws. Duke, though, went on a 16-4 run to extend its to lead to 64-47. Irving's layup capped the spurt with just under 12 minutes remaining.
The Wildcats got no closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
