Jayhawks continue to roll with victory over Cal

Dec 23, 2010 - 6:57 AM Berkeley, CA (Sports Network) - Markieff Morris poured in 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, as the third-ranked Kansas Jayhawks stayed perfect with a 78-63 victory over the California Golden Bears as part of the Pete Newell Classic.

Tyrel Reed added 18 points and seven boards for the Jayhawks (11-0), who played their first true road game of the 2010-11 season. Freshman guard Josh Selby also scored 18 points.

Jorge Gutierrez finished with 15 points for the Golden Bears (6-5), who have lost three of four. Allen Crabbe donated 11 points and six rebounds, while Markhuri Sanders-Frison tallied 10 points and 12 rebounds in defeat.

Trailing by three, 8-5, early in the first half, the Jayhawks put together an 18-5 run. Morris tallied nine points during the stretch, including a three- pointer to give Kansas a 23-13 lead with 10:18 remaining.

California used a 7-2 flurry to prevent the Jayhawks from pulling away. Harper Kamp's three-point play cut the gap to 25-20 with 6:37 left.

Morris made two free throws with two seconds to go to give Kansas a 38-30 edge at the half.

The Jayhawks seemed ready to pull away after scoring the first nine points of the second half for a 47-30 advantage.

The Golden Bears used an ensuing 17-3 surge to pull within three. Nigel Carter capped the burst with a layup for a 50-47 contest with 12:48 to play.

Kansas was able to put the game away with a 21-6 burst. Reed tallied seven points during the flurry, which Morris ended with a jumper for a 71-53 lead with 6:50 left.

The Jayhawks cruised to victory from there.

Game Notes

Kansas has won 16 of the 19 all-time meetings between these two teams, including each of the last 10 matchups. Last season, the Jayhawks posted an 84-69 win over the Golden Bears in Lawrence. This marked the first time since 1956 that Kansas took on Cal at the Haas Pavilion...Gary Franklin and Kamp each had eight points for the Golden Bears, who shot 35.1 percent from the field.
