Purdue too much for Michigan in Big Ten opener
Dec 28, 2010 - 10:39 PM Ann Arbor, MI (Sports Network) - JaJuan Johnson finished with 22 points and E'Twaun Moore scored 21, leading 12th-ranked Purdue to an 80-57 victory over Michigan in the teams' Big Ten opener.Johnson added eight rebounds and three blocks, while Moore posted nine boards and four assists for the Boilermakers (12-1, 1-0 Big Ten), who have won seven consecutive games.
Ryne Smith went 5-for-6 from three-point range and added 17 points in the victory.
Stu Douglass led Michigan (10-3, 0-1) with 15 points, but no other Wolverines player reached double digits as they had a seven-game win streak broken. Michigan scored only eight points over the final eight minutes.
"We had some really bad lulls offensively, which really led us to bad defense," said Michigan head coach John Beilein.
Purdue took the win by bookending the game with lopsided runs, long stretches in which the Boilermakers poured in the points and caused big problems for Michigan's offense.
Moore guided Purdue to an early lead, scoring seven consecutive points to make it a 12-2 game less than four minutes in. Michigan's offense was nearly non- existent against the Boilermakers' pressure defense, and with about 11 minutes left in the half, Smith drained a three to make it a 19-3 contest.
But that was a high-water mark in the first half for Purdue, as Michigan used an 11-0 run, fueled by long-range shooting, to get back in the game. Douglass started it with a three, while Evan Smotrycz made two from beyond the arc. His second capped the rally with 5:17 to go and had the Wolverines within 21-19.
Michigan remained close and took the lead with 1:20 on the clock, when Jon Horford's dunk made it a 26-25 game. However, Purdue scored the final five points of the half to carry a lead into the break.
The Wolverines stayed within single digits over the first 12 minutes of the second half, for the most part. With 8:05 to play, Darius Morris sank a trey to trim Michigan's deficit to 57-49.
But Purdue followed with a 17-2 run to blow the game apart. The Boilermakers scored three baskets off turnovers during the stretch, which Smith ended with a layup. The basket made it a 74-51 game with under four minutes left, and Purdue led by as many as 26 in cruising down the stretch.
