Tennesee hits triple digits, downs Memphis
Jan 6, 2011 - 5:53 AM Knoxville, TN (Sports Network) - Tobias Harris had 17 points and 13 rebounds to help Tennessee take down in-state rival No. 21 Memphis, 104-84.Scotty Hopson had 16 points while Melvin Goins went 4-for-4 from three-point range on the way to a 15-point game for the Volunteers (10-4), who have won three of their last four.
"I thought the guys were physical," said Tennessee head coach Bruce Pearl. "I thought they were aggressive. It helped us that Memphis, playing on the road for the first time, didn't shoot well early. I think you can see how talented they are. I think you can see what they are capable of."
Will Coleman totaled 17 points and nine rebounds and Will Barton added 14 points for the Tigers (11-3), who had taken their previous two games.
"There is not too much to say other than Tennessee beat us," said Memphis head coach Josh Pastner. "They shot the ball really well. The biggest thing is we've got to play defense and we've got to care about Memphis on the front of the jersey."
Tennessee led this game from start to finish as Goins opened the scoring with a three-pointer and Harris' jumper with over 12 minutes left put the Volunteers up 24-10.
A 13-3 run in the latter stages of the first half moved Tennessee's advantage to 45-20, but Memphis scored the final seven points to make it a 49-34 game going into the break.
Barton and D.J. Stephens hit a three-pointer and a layup, respectively, to make it a 10-point contest to start the second half, but Hopson countered with a slam and Goins hit consecutive three-balls to build the margin back to 18.
A bit later, the Volunteers scored 14 straight points to build their advantage to 32 points and were never threatened the rest of the way.
