Aggies easily handle Sooners

Jan 9, 2011 - 2:20 AM Norman, OK (Sports Network) - Khris Middleton scored 16 points, Naji Hibbert had 14 and No. 16 Texas A&M opened its Big 12 schedule with a 69-51 victory over conference foe Oklahoma.

B.J. Holmes added 13 points and the Aggies (14-1, 1-0 Big 12) extended their winning streak to 11 games since their only loss of the season to Boston College on November 25.

Oklahoma, after winning three straight games against inferior competition, suffered its first loss since December 18 against Cincinnati.

The Sooners (8-7, 0-1) got 17 points from Andrew Fitzgerald and 13 from Cade Davis, but fell into an early hole and could never catch up.

"I thought we did some good things in spurts, but when you're playing against this kind of team it's not good enough to do it in spurts -- you have to do it all the time," said Oklahoma head coach Jeff Capel.

Texas A&M scored the game's first two points on David Loubeau's jumper and Oklahoma responded with a bucket from Fitzgerald.

But it was the only time the game was tied. The Sooners never led.

Instead, the Aggies rattled off the next five points for a 7-2 lead and were ahead by 12 just 8 1/2 minutes into the game.

Oklahoma got as close as six, but Texas A&M responded with a 13-6 run for a 13-point lead and was ahead by eight, 36-28, at halftime behind 57 percent shooting.

The Sooners were again within six points early in the second half, but no real rally came. The Aggies used a 16-2 burst to go in front by 20 with 8 1/2 minutes left in the game and Oklahoma was never closer than 17 the rest of the way.

Texas A&M led by as many as 22 points late in the game when a Middleton dunk made it 69-47.

"I thought that we were pretty good the first half and really good in the second half," said Texas A&M head coach Mark Turgeon. "The guys played well and they deserve this. They really had a tough week."

The Aggies shot 54 percent from the field for the game while holding the Sooners to just 40 percent shooting.

Oklahoma still leads the all-time series 28-7...The Aggies improved to just 3-14 all-time in Norman...The Sooners were coming off wins over Sacramento State, Central Arkansas and Maryland-Eastern Shore.
