No. 3 Kansas gets past Michigan in OT

Jan 10, 2011 - 1:15 AM Ann Arbor, MI (Sports Network) - Marcus Morris scored five of his game-high 22 points in overtime, as No. 3 Kansas was tested by unranked Michigan before pulling away for a 67-60 victory.

Morris helped the Jayhawks overcome a three-pointer from Michigan's Zack Novak to start overtime, scoring his five points during an 8-0 run that put Kansas back in front.

Twin brother Markieff Morris buried a three-pointer during the spurt that gave the Jayhawks (15-0) the lead for good and scored 13 in the game. Both brothers had double-doubles, with Marcus grabbing 10 rebounds and Markieff 11.

Tyshawn Taylor added 12 points in the win and Tyrel Reed had 10.

Michigan rallied from as far back as 15 points, tying the game at 51-51 on Darius Morris' turnaround jumper with 34 seconds left in regulation.

But the Wolverines (11-5) failed in their upset bid despite a spirited effort that included 19 points from Tim Hardaway Jr. and 16 from Darius Morris.

Their third loss in four games could have been worse. Michigan came back several times, using an 8-0 run at the end of the first half to overcome Kansas' 15-point lead and pull within 25-18.

The Wolverines fell behind by as many as 13 in the second half, then scored seven straight points to get back into it. Later, they cut a nine-point deficit to four with a short burst capped by Novak's three-pointer with 3:41 remaining.

Kansas answered on Marcus Morris' layup, but Hardaway's lay-in kept the Wolverines within four. Both players missed three-pointers -- Hardaway's rattled out, but his steal led to Novak's putback to get Michigan within 51-49 with 1:31 left.

The only other bucket in regulation was Darius Morris' jumper to tie the game for Michigan. Reed and Marcus Morris both missed three-pointers in the final 69 seconds for Kansas.

Novak's three-pointer 39 seconds into overtime riled up the home crowd, but it was Michigan's only bucket for the first 2:09 of the session.

Marcus Morris made two free throws and Markieff drilled his three-pointer to give Kansas a 56-54 lead. After Marcus Morris converted a three-point play, Hardaway scored on an athletic one-handed shot to get the Wolverines within 59-56.

But Reed drained a three for the Jayhawks at the other end for a six-point lead and Kansas went ahead by seven two times down the stretch, including the final margin.

Michigan still leads the all-time series 5-2...Novak had 12 points and 11 rebounds...Stu Douglass grabbed 10 board for Michigan...Both teams shot poorly from the field -- Kansas at 36 percent and Michigan 33...The Jayhawks begin their Big 12 schedule at Iowa State on Wednesday.
