No. 1 Duke remains unbeaten, tops Maryland

Jan 10, 2011 - 7:09 AM Durham, NC (Sports Network) - Kyle Singler recorded a double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds, as the top-ranked Duke Blue Devils remained unbeaten with a 71-64 victory over the Maryland Terrapins at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Nolan Smith added 18 points, eight assists and seven rebounds for the Blue Devils (15-0, 2-0 ACC), who are off to a 15-0 start for the fifth time in school history.

Seth Curry donated 12 points off the bench for Duke, which has now won 25 straight contests. The Blue Devils also extended their homecourt winning streak to 29 games.

"Well it was a huge win for us because we played against as well-coached a team as we have played against all year," Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "I mean Gary [Williams]'s a great friend but he's a great coach and his game plan against us was magnificent. They did everything possible to take Nolan [Smith] out of the game."

Jordan Williams had 23 points and 13 boards to pace the Terrapins (10-5, 0-2), who had won three in a row coming in. Cliff Tucker chipped in with 14 points and seven rebounds.

Neither team led by more than seven in the first half. Singler's tip-in just before the break gave Duke a 32-31 edge.

The Terrapins came out of the locker room with upset on their mind, scoring the first seven points of the second half. Sean Mosley tallied the final four points of the surge to give Maryland a 38-32 lead.

Curry's jumper with 16:16 to play finally got Duke on the board in the second stanza. It proved to be a big bucket for the Blue Devils, as it sparked a 14-2 run.

A total of nine points were scored by Curry during the stretch, including a three-pointer with 13:04 remaining for a 46-40 Duke lead.

Maryland was quick to respond with six straight points of its own to tie the game. The Terrapins continued to hang around, and trailed 55-54 following Williams' layup with 6:38 to go.

Singler and Andre Dawkins each made three-pointers around Mosley's jumper to give the Blue Devils a 61-56 margin with 5:14 left. Mosley then turned the ball over, leading to Singler's layup and a seven-point contest.

The Terrapins never got closer than five the rest of the way.

"I was proud of my team tonight," Maryland head coach Gary Williams said. "We came in with the intensity level necessary to compete against Duke here, and we did some good things with our offense here. The best thing we did there early when we weren't making any shots was we hung in there. Our defense was good enough to keep us there until we started making some shots. And I thought we played pretty well for quite a few periods in the game."

Duke holds a 108-61 advantage in the all-time series...The Blue Devils also opened the 2005-06, 2004-05, 1991-92 and 1985-86 seasons with 15 straight victories...The Terrapins are second all-time nationally in the number of wins over a No. 1 opponent. North Carolina has knocked off a top-ranked team 12 times, with Maryland and UCLA having done it 10 times. Maryland's last victory over a No. 1 team was on January 19, 2008 in an 82-80 win at North Carolina.
