Missouri mauls Kansas State

Jan 18, 2011 - 2:21 AM Columbia, MO (Sports Network) - Marcus Denmon finished with 14 points and Phil Pressey poured in 13 points to help No. 13 Missouri post a 75-59 victory over Kansas State at Mizzou Arena.

Kim English, Ricardo Ratliffe and Laurence Bowers each contributed 10 points for the Tigers (16-3, 2-2 Big 12), who bounced back from a 91-89 overtime loss to Texas A&M on Saturday.

"K-State's a great team, this is a good win for us." said Mizzou head coach Mike Anderson. "Our players gave a good effort tonight and it was good to protect our home court. I also thought we did a good job of spreading the ball around. We also did well to force turnovers. Coming off a close loss on Saturday, I was happy that our players were able to put that game behind them and play well tonight. We know that conference play is a 16-game season, so we want to improve throughout the year, and tonight was a good start."

Jacob Pullen notched 16 points for Kansas State (13-6, 1-3), which has lost three of its last four contests. Jordan Henriquez-Roberts chipped in with 14 points and six rebounds in the losing effort.

"We had bad turnovers," said Kansas State head coach Frank Martin. "It's not like we weren't aggressive, it was just lackadaisical travels -- forced plays trying to go one-on-one, lazy passes, lazy cuts. You're going to turn it over a couple of times against Missouri, it's what they do. But when you have bad turnovers you might as well just put a basket on the scoreboard."

Kansas State opened the second half on a 10-3 run to get back into the game, 46-38. At the midway point of the second half, it became a three-point game, 53-50, off of Pullen's short jumper in traffic.

About a minute later, English made a three-pointer for a six-point lead, although, Will Spradling responded with a trey to cut it back to three.

Missouri went on a 12-point, game-deciding spurt during the next 4 1/2 minutes. The run was highlighted Bowers' ally-oop dunk from Pressey, who stole the ball from Pullen to set up the breakaway play.

The Wildcats were unable to overcome the deficit as the Tigers iced the game from the free throw line.

It took nearly two minutes of play for the game's first basket when K-State's Jamar Samuels made a layup. It was a telling sign of what type of game it was going to be as there were four turnovers in the first three minutes.

The game was close until Missouri's Michael Dixon hit a trey with 7:37 left in the half to make it a 26-17 game.

Up 35-28 with two minutes left in the half, Missouri pulled away even more to end the first half scoring the final eight points. Pressey made back-to-back layins to lead the run, which gave the home team a 43-28 edge at the break.

Game Notes

With the win, Missouri knots the all-time series at 116 wins apiece...The Tigers are now 12-0 at home this year while the Wildcats are 2-2 as the visitor...Kansas State had 24 turnovers, while Missouri only turned the ball over 12 times...The Wildcats were cold from the three-point arc where they shot 18.8 percent (3-of-16) and Missouri drilled 8-of-19 shots from beyond the arc.
