Washington State takes down No. 18 Washington
Jan 31, 2011 - 6:06 AM Pullman, WA (Sports Network) - Klay Thompson finished with a game-high 25 points as the Washington State Cougars used a strong second half to top No. 18 Washington, 87-80, at Beasley Coliseum.Reggie Moore added 18 points while Faisal Aden scored 15 on 3-of-6 from beyond the arc for the Cougars (15-6, 5-4 Pac 10), who have won three of four. DeAngelo Casto scored 11 points to go along with a team-high eight rebounds for the victors.
Isaiah Thomas led the Huskies (15-5, 7-2) with 19 points. Justin Holiday scored 16 with 12 rebounds and Terrence Ross went 4-of-8 from long range on his way to 14 points.
Washington saw a three-game winning streak snapped and lost for the second time in its last three road contests.
Washington State led 45-43 at the half behind 11 points from both Thompson and Casto. Aden added 10 points, including 2-of-3 from the long range, as the Cougars shot 50 percent from the field in the first half.
The Huskies used a balanced attack, fueled by nine points from Darnell Gant and eight from Ross, however they committed 10 costly turnovers that led to the two-point deficit after 20 minutes.
Both teams struggled in the opening minutes of the second half, but a Moore three-pointer at 17:33 gave the Cougars a 50-44 edge. Moore's basket started an 8-0 Washington State run, that he capped with a fastbreak dunk to widen its edge to 55-44 3 1/2 minutes in.
The Huskies trimmed the deficit to four, 57-53, with a pair of Holiday free throws at 13:03, however, just over a minute later the Washington State lead was back up to seven after Thompson converted on a layup off an Aden steal.
Thompson added a long three-pointer at 5:24 to put the Cougars up 80-69, and their lead never fell below six down the stretch.
