Duke gets back on track, handles Maryland

Feb 3, 2011 - 6:26 AM College Park, MD (Sports Network) - Kyle Singler scored 22 points on an efficient 10-of-15 shooting effort, and No. 5 Duke rebounded from a lopsided loss over the weekend to down Maryland, 80-62, in convincing fashion.

The Blue Devils (20-2, 7-1 ACC) were blown out by St. John's at Madison Square Garden on Sunday and responded by making 53 percent from the floor and committing only eight turnovers in their return to ACC play.

"We're obviously very pleased with our effort tonight," said Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski. "I think we played our best game since Kyrie [Irving] got hurt. I think we had to because Maryland was primed to play an outstanding game."

Nolan Smith ended with 21 points, while Mason Plumlee chipped in 12 points and 11 rebounds for the victors.

Jordan Williams logged his usual double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Terrapins (14-8, 4-4), who had their three-game winning streak snapped.

"We did a very poor job defensively against a team on different things," said Maryland head coach Gary Williams. "Singler there in the second half really hurt us when he got loose and we had made a little bit of a run. It's a team thing. You have to get ready to play. You have to believe you can win that game and that's what we have to work on."

Duke trailed 16-15 near the midway point of the first half before a Singler three-pointer sparked a 23-7 spurt. The visitors made four more from behind the arc during the seven-minute run, with Andre Dawkins' trifecta yielding a 38-23 advantage with four minutes left before intermission.

Maryland scored 10 of the final 12 point of the half to pull within seven, 40-33, but went the first four-plus minutes of the second stanza without a field goal.

A Singler jumper with 12 1/2 minutes left gave the Blue Devils a 56-43 cushion before Maryland went on one final burst, scoring eight straight points to put the pressure back on the former top-ranked team.

Duke never faltered, as Dawkins made three-pointers two straight times down the court to rebuild the difference to double digits, 64-53, with less than seven minutes remaining.

Despite the rabid Comcast Center crowd pushing them along, the Terrapins never got within single digits from there.

Duke, which has not lost two in a row since the 2008-09 season, has won at least 20 games each of the last 15 seasons...The Blue Devils have won eight of the last nine meetings...Duke was outscored at the foul line, 20-10, but made 10 three-pointers to Maryland's two...Dawkins finished with 11 points...Williams has 19 double-doubles on the season...Both teams are in action on Saturday, as Duke hosts NC State and Maryland welcomes Wake Forest.
